Futures Thinking
Paul Van Shaik
A collection of visions, ideas, ideas, theories, actions, etc. that give rise to a taste of the many visions in our world. How we use all the best elements of the many worldviews, modern and ancient, visible and still hidden, together and in collaboration, will define how successful we are. https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/urban-hub-36-walking1-thriving-cities-worlds/270299461 https://integralinstitute.academia.edu/PaulVanSchaik |
The Second Renaissance is both a period and a movement: a "time between worlds", and a growing movement of people working to build shared understanding towards a radically wiser future. From the climate crisis to populism, from rising inequality to AI risk, visible and growing cracks are appearing in planetary civilization.
Accurate diagnosis is vital if we are not only to address the symptoms but heal, transform and transcend our interconnected crises. The stakes are high - never before has human civilization risked collapse on a global scale. Here we will suggest that these growing cracks go to the foundations of our societies: to the way we see ourselves, each other and the world. lifeitself.org/ |

Wellbeing framework approaches
The Nova Scotia Quality of Life Initiative
Traditionally, much of the information we use to make decisions is based on economic data. When we asked Nova Scotia residents how they think we should measure success (on a scale of 1-10): 58% said: “By growing the economy.” 82% said: “By improving our quality of life.” Based on this response, we believe that if we treasure it, we should measure it. So we embarked on two firsts, in partnership with the Canadian Index of Wellbeing and groups across the province, to: Release the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Index in 2018, and Undertake the Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey in 2019. Almost 13,000 people responded to 230 questions, making it the single largest dataset of its kind in North America. Since surveying, we’ve been sharing the results widely and equipping people to use them - and creating innovative tools to do that, like the Wellbeing Mapping Tool and Wellbeing Analysis Tool. https://engagenovascotia.caengagenovascotia.ca |
Integral City Meshworks

Launched in 2005, and now in Canada, USA, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Russia, Mexico, Australia and South Africa, we connect the 4 Voices of the city to energize relationships, that unify visions and develop eco-regional resilience strategies for hive wellbeing. Through placecaring and placemaking we inspire a Planet of Integral Cities as living, integral, evolutionary human systems, to become Gaia’s Reflective Organs. |
The Flourish Project
https://www.flourishproject.net The Flourish Project has been developing a new ecological wellbeing framework for understanding and mapping human wellbeing that promotes community involvement and whole-systems thinking. Currently moving into its pilot period, it offers parents, teachers, schools, care-homes, businesses, city-leaders and national policymakers the ability to better understand and promote the health and wellbeing of both themselves and their own local communities and populations. In each case, it provides a quick and easy way to map and evaluate existing wellbeing scales and indicators that promotes eco-systemic thinking and the need to 'measure what matters'. Above all, it underpins the call for a more caring, sustainable and compassionate world. |
